EU designates Roblox a very large platform: what changes for children, and what does not

Since 31 August 2026, Roblox counts as a very large online platform in the EU. That brings the strictest rules of the Digital Services Act. What Roblox has to do now, by when, and why you will not notice anything yet.

The European Commission designated Roblox a “very large online platform” on 31 August 2026. It sounds like official jargon, but the meaning is simple: from now on, Roblox falls under the strictest rules the EU has for internet services. The same rules that already apply to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

One thing right at the start, so nobody waits for the wrong thing: nothing changes in the game itself today. No button has disappeared, no setting is new. This is a decision about obligations, and the deadline for them has only just started running.

Why Roblox is now in this group

The law is called the Digital Services Act, DSA for short, and it applies across the whole EU. It contains a single threshold: any service with an average of at least 45 million users a month in the EU lands in the strictest tier. Roblox reported that figure itself and is above it.

Reddit and ChatGPT were designated on the same day. That makes 28 services in this top tier, with Roblox the first pure gaming platform. (European Commission announcement, 31 August 2026)

What Roblox has to do now

The Commission names four points that matter to parents:

  1. Look for risks and name them. Once a year, Roblox has to examine for itself what dangers come from the platform. Explicitly named: negative effects on minors, and on the physical and mental health of users.
  2. Reduce those risks, too. Writing them down is not enough.
  3. Accept checks from outside. Independent auditors verify whether what Roblox reports is accurate.
  4. Give data to researchers and authorities. Until now, nobody on the outside could work out how often something goes wrong.

A service that does not comply can be charged up to six percent of its worldwide annual turnover by the EU. That is why designations like this are taken seriously.

The deadline: four months from the notification, so until January 2027. Until then, Roblox runs as before.

Who actually supervises this

Not the German authorities. Roblox has its European headquarters in the Netherlands, so the Dutch regulator ACM is responsible.

ACM is not new to the subject. It has been investigating Roblox since 30 January 2026, and specifically because of children. The investigation covers violent and sexual content in user-built games, contact between adults and children, and design tricks inside the games that push children towards spending. It is set up to run for about twelve months and is still ongoing.

What this means for you at home

Honestly: nothing in the short term. The value lies elsewhere.

Until now, Roblox introduced protective rules when Roblox felt like it. The most recent example is the block on endless video feeds in children’s accounts. Voluntary, and impossible to verify from outside.

That is exactly what is turning around now. From 2027, Roblox has to prove what it does, and others are allowed to check. For a platform whose audience consists largely of children, that is the real progress here.

What it is not: an all clear. No law sets the chat options correctly in your home. Which switches actually make a difference is explained in Is Roblox safe for children. On the age question, How old do you have to be to play Roblox? helps.

Last checked: 1 September 2026. The designation has applied since 31 August 2026, and the deadline runs until January 2027. If Roblox announces concrete changes, we will write about them.
