The USK, the German age rating body, has rated Roblox 16 and over since the start of 2025. Roblox itself rates every game from Minimal to Restricted and sets up every account by age. What parents need to know before their child starts.

Contents

In Germany, the USK, the German age rating body, has rated Roblox 16 and over since the start of 2025. Before that it was 12 and over. Why the rating went up so sharply is explained in detail in our article Why is Roblox now rated 16?. But if you only look at that one number, you have not really understood Roblox yet. Roblox is not an app with one game in it. It is a platform with millions of games. And each of them has its own rating.

As of 25 September 2026. On this day we checked the Roblox Help articles on content maturity labels, the age groups, age checks, the minimum age, parental controls and the chat filter, as well as the maturity label of Murder Mystery 2 on Roblox, the USK announcement on the Roblox rating and the age information in Google Play and the App Store.

What that means day to day: the USK number says nothing about which game a child opens right now. On Roblox, two other things decide that: the rating of each single game and the age on the child’s account. We explain both here.

If you do not know yet what Roblox actually is, our page What is Roblox is a calm place to start.

How Roblox rates its games

Roblox shows a content maturity label on the page of every game. According to Roblox Help, there are four levels:

  • Minimal: may contain occasional mild violence, light unrealistic blood or occasional mild fear.
  • Mild: may contain repeated mild violence, heavy unrealistic blood, mild crude humor or repeated mild fear.
  • Moderate: may contain moderate violence, light realistic blood, moderate crude humor, unplayable gambling content or moderate fear.
  • Restricted: may contain, among other things, strong violence, heavy realistic blood, romantic themes, alcohol and strong language. These games are only open to age-checked users aged 18 and over.

According to Roblox, the information about what is in a game comes from the people who make the game. So the label does not replace a quick look into the game yourself.

What the age on the account does on Roblox

According to Roblox, an account is possible from age 5. The age on the account tells Roblox which content and communication features should be available by default. Roblox Help describes these age groups:

  • Ages 5 to 8, Roblox Kids: only selected games rated Minimal and Mild. After the age check, all communication is off at first, and children may only chat with their parents’ consent.
  • Ages 9 to 12, Roblox Select: a selection of games up to Moderate. For certain communication features, children need their parents’ consent.
  • Ages 13 to 15, Roblox Select: children manage their privacy settings, screen time and blocking other users themselves, and spending limits no longer apply. Parents with a linked account still manage direct chat and can allow or block single games.
  • Ages 16 and 17: all games except those rated 18 and over.

According to Roblox Help, chat is filtered by default for all users. For children under 13, Roblox explicitly filters their posts as well, so that no inappropriate content and no personal information gets through.

An age on the account that is too high puts it into an age group with fewer limits. According to Roblox Help, an age check is currently required for all chat and for Restricted games, either by estimating the age from the face or, from age 13, with an ID. If an account says 13 or older and the estimate comes out under 13, it is moved to the younger age group after a 48-hour grace period. For the other games, the date of birth on the account counts as long as there is no age check, which Roblox calls a transition period. After an age check, the age group from the check counts.

Tip: it is best to create the account together, with the child’s real date of birth, and then link your own parent account. Only through that link can parents set up parental controls. How it works is in our guide Create a Roblox account.

The Roblox rating in the App Store and Play Store

In Germany, Google Play shows the USK rating of 16, with the same reasons as the USK. Apple’s App Store uses its own age levels and shows 13+ with content restrictions for Roblox, with notes such as frequent cartoon or fantasy violence and loot boxes. So the number depends on the store. Neither number tells you which game is running right now. For that, the Roblox labels on the games and a quick look into the game yourself help.

What the rating means for Murder Mystery 2

Roblox rates Murder Mystery 2 Moderate, for repeated moderate violence and light realistic blood. So in a Roblox Kids account for ages 5 to 8, it can only be played if the parents allow it individually in parental controls. From age 9, a Roblox Select account can also include Moderate games. But Select only opens a selection of games, and if a game is not in it, parents can allow it individually. The game idea is clear, and the rounds are short.

What parents should also keep an eye on with MM2 is the trading system that runs alongside it. Children swap knives and items with each other, and that comes with its own rules and values, which outsiders do not understand straight away. On our page about MM2 trading we explain how it works. If you want to check whether an item was valued fairly in a trade, our MM2 value list gives you a guide.

The conclusion in one sentence

The USK says 16 and over, many families deliberately decide otherwise, and the key question always stays the same: which game is on the screen right now? A quick look beforehand, the correct date of birth when the account is created, and a linked parent account, through which you set chat and games in parental controls, are the three things that really help.

Where the information comes from

The four levels and their descriptions are in Roblox Help under Content Maturity Labels, which also says that the people who make a game provide the information about its content. The Roblox Kids and Roblox Select age groups and what changes from 13 are under What happens as my child or teen gets older on Roblox? Which features need an age check, how it works, what 16- and 17-year-olds can play, the transition period and the 48-hour grace period are under Understanding Age Checks on Roblox, the minimum age of 5 under How do I change my age? That Kids and Select accounts only open a selection of games and that parents set up parental controls through a linked account is in the Parental Controls Overview, and the chat filter for children under 13 is under Safety Features: Chat, Privacy & Filtering. Roblox shows the Moderate label on the Murder Mystery 2 game page. The change from USK 12 to USK 16 is in the USK announcement of 15 January 2025, Game Creator Plattformen auf dem Prüfstand (in German). The store information is on the Roblox listing in the German Google Play Store and the Roblox listing in the German App Store.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official age rating for Roblox?+

The USK, the German age rating body, has rated the Roblox platform 16 and over since the start of 2025. Before that it was 12 and over. That rating is about the platform itself. On top of that, Roblox rates every game itself, with the labels Minimal, Mild, Moderate and Restricted. According to Roblox, Restricted games are only open to age-checked users aged 18 and over. An account is possible from age 5. In the end, parents are the ones who decide whether a child plays.

What happens if a child enters a wrong age on Roblox?+

Roblox uses the age on the account to decide which games and features are available by default. Children aged 5 to 8 get a Roblox Kids account, children aged 9 to 15 a Roblox Select account. Anyone who enters an age that is too high ends up in an age group with fewer limits. For any chat, though, Roblox currently requires an age check, either by estimating the age from the face or, from age 13, with an ID. If an account says 13 or older and the estimate comes out under 13, it is moved to the younger age group after a 48-hour grace period. Children under 9 may only chat with their parents' consent, and children aged 9 to 12 need it for certain chat features. That is why parents should be there when the account is created and enter the real date of birth.

Is Murder Mystery 2 suitable for younger children?+

Roblox rates Murder Mystery 2 Moderate, for repeated moderate violence and light realistic blood. So in a Roblox Kids account for ages 5 to 8, it can only be played if the parents allow it individually in parental controls. From age 9, a Roblox Select account can also include Moderate games. But Select only opens a selection of games, and if a game is not in it, parents can allow it individually. The game idea is clear, and the rounds are short. What parents should also keep an eye on is the trading system that runs alongside it.
