How to create a Roblox account: a safe guide for kids and parents

A Roblox account is set up quickly. Here is the step by step way for children and parents to set it up safely together: the real date of birth, a parent's email address, a linked parent account instead of the retired parent PIN, and parental controls.

Contents

A Roblox account is set up in a few minutes. What matters comes after that: the real date of birth, a parent’s email address and a separate parent account that is linked to the child’s account. Only through this link can parents set the parental controls, meaning content, chat, spending and screen time. Roblox no longer has the parent PIN that this guide used to describe.

As of 25 September 2026. On this day we checked the Roblox Help articles on the parent PIN, parental controls, linking to a child’s account, changing your age, age checks, the age groups, email addresses, account security and the safety features in chat, as well as the Roblox page on parental controls and the maturity label of Murder Mystery 2 on Roblox.

If you have not installed Roblox yet, the guide for that is here: Download and install Roblox.

Step 1: Create the account

Signing up starts on roblox.com or in the Roblox app. Roblox asks for the date of birth. According to Roblox, accounts are for ages 5 and up, and sign up does not even show birthday options for younger children.

For the username there is one simple rule: no real names, no school, no home town. A made up name is better, for example a fantasy word, an animal and a number. Roblox itself says never to give out personal details.

The date of birth decides what the account can do. According to Roblox, the age on the account tells it which content and communication features should be available by default. Children aged 5 to 8 get a Roblox Kids account. It only shows games with a Minimal or Mild content maturity label, and after the age check all communication is switched off at first. These children can only chat with parental permission. From 9, children get a Roblox Select account (up to 15), which also shows games rated Moderate. Children aged 9 to 12 also need parental permission for certain communication features. Roblox filters the chats and posts of players aged 12 and younger, so that inappropriate content and personal information do not get through.

Anyone who enters an older date so the child can do more ends up in an age group with fewer limits. For chat, though, Roblox requires an age check, either by estimating the age from the face or, from age 13, with an ID. If an account says 13 or older but the estimate comes out under 13, the account moves to the younger age group after a 48 hour grace period. So enter the real age, even if the child would rather be older.

Step 2: Choose the password and the email properly

Roblox advises a different password for every account, one that is hard to guess. As bad examples, Roblox names common passwords such as pass123 and passwords that use part of the username. Set the password together with the child and keep it somewhere you can find it again, for example on paper in a drawer, not as a screenshot on the phone. How long a secure password should be, and how a second login step protects the account on top of that, is explained in our guide Securing your Roblox account: how to set up 2-step verification.

On email addresses Roblox is clear: the only address verified on an account should be your own or a parent’s. If you put someone else’s address there, that person receives the password reset emails and with them access to the account. For children under 13, Roblox has its own solution: a parent verifies their address on the child’s account under Settings, Account Info as a parental recovery email. If the child forgets their password, the parent can then help them get back into the account. This address can be different from the one on the parent account in step 3. A child’s own address, on the other hand, does not necessarily stay on the account: if facial age estimation places a child in the 5 to 8 or 9 to 12 age group, Roblox Help says it removes their email address and phone number, among other things.

A parent PIN used to protect the settings. It no longer exists. Roblox Help says: “Roblox has replaced parent PIN with Roblox accounts with parent privileges”. So parents create their own Roblox account, or use the one they already have, and link it to the child’s account. After that they can view and change the parental controls from their own device, without logging into the child’s account every time. Parent privileges are only for people who are age checked as 18 or older.

According to Roblox, this is how you link from the child’s account:

  1. Open Settings on the child’s account: on a computer with the gear icon at the top right, on a phone with “More” at the bottom right and then the gear icon.
  2. Select “Parental Controls” and then “Add parent”.
  3. If Roblox asks for an email address, enter a parent’s address. Roblox sends an email with instructions there.
  4. In the email, select “Create account”, or select “Use existing account” to log in with the parent account you already have. The email address on the parent account has to match the one Roblox wrote to.
  5. Verify your own age, according to Roblox with a government ID or a credit card. The Roblox page on parental controls advises having a government ID ready.
  6. Select “Agree”. The accounts are now linked.

Important for everyday life: according to Roblox, anyone with access to the parent account can make changes to sensitive information, including the linked child accounts. So only you know the password of the parent account, not the child. Roblox accounts are free, and several parents can each connect to the same child from their own account.

Step 4: Set up parental controls

The settings are then on the parent account under Settings, Parental Controls. Select the child’s account there, and below it you find the settings you manage. According to Roblox Help they include:

  • Content: the content maturity level with a slider, allowing or blocking single games, games with sensitive topics.
  • Communication: game chat, direct chat inside a game and chat with friends. Chat can only be set once the child has completed an age check. Children under 9 need parental permission for game chat, children under 13 for direct chat.
  • Private servers: who may join your child’s private servers and whose servers your child may join, in the English interface “Connections” or “Off”.
  • Friends: view the friends list and block and report single friends.
  • Spending: a monthly spending limit and notifications about purchases. According to Roblox, the limit does not affect redeeming gift cards.
  • Screen time: a daily limit. Once it is reached, the child can no longer use Roblox for the rest of the day.

In most regions, according to Roblox, parents manage all settings up to age 12, and some, such as game management and direct chat, up to 15. From 13, children manage their own privacy settings, screen time and blocking other users, and spending limits no longer apply. Parents can still manage direct chat and allow or block single games. When the age on the account reaches a new stage, Roblox sends a message to the child and the linked parent account. That is a good moment to go through the settings together.

What can come next

Once the account is set up and linked to the parent account, you are ready to go. If your child is interested in Murder Mystery 2, it is worth knowing that Roblox rates the game Moderate, among other things for repeated moderate violence. So in a Roblox Kids account for ages 5 to 8, it only shows up if the parents allow it individually in parental controls. If you collect and trade items there, our MM2 value list helps you get your bearings, and there is a full explanation on our page about MM2 trading.

Questions about the right age, and about what Roblox offers for different age groups, are answered in our article What age is Roblox from?.

Where the information comes from

That Roblox replaced the parent PIN is in Roblox Help under Parent PIN General Information. What an account with parent privileges is, who can create one and why it should not be shared is in the Parental Controls FAQ, and the linking steps are under Parents: How to Link Your Child’s Account. The individual parental control settings are described in the Parental Controls Overview. The minimum age and correcting the birthday are under How do I change my age?, the age check, the 48 hour grace period and the removal of the email address under Understanding Age Checks on Roblox. What Kids and Select accounts can do and what changes from 13 is under What happens as my child or teen gets older on Roblox? The parental recovery email is under Verifying Your Email Address or Phone Number, the rules on passwords, other people’s email addresses and personal details under Keep Your Account Safe, and the chat filter for players aged 12 and younger under Safety Features: Chat, Privacy & Filtering. The route through the parent’s email, the advice on the ID and the age limits 12 and 15 are on the Roblox page Parental Controls. Roblox shows the Moderate label on the Murder Mystery 2 game page.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I enter the wrong date of birth for a Roblox account?+

According to Roblox Help, you can correct a mistake from sign up in Settings on the Account Info tab, using the pencil icon next to the birthday. Depending on the change, Roblox asks for a government ID (for users 13 and over) or parental consent. A linked parent account can change the child's birthday only once. If the child has already verified their age with a government ID, the birthday cannot be changed through parental controls at all. Entering an older age does not help much with chat anyway: Roblox requires an age check for it. If an account says 13 or older but the estimate comes out under 13, the account moves to the younger age group after a 48 hour grace period.

Do children need their own email address for Roblox?+

For children under 13, Roblox has a parent's address in mind. The parent verifies it on the child's account under Settings, Account Info as a parental recovery email. If the child forgets their password, the parent can then help them get back into the account. A child's own address does not always stay on the account anyway: if facial age estimation places a child in the 5 to 8 or 9 to 12 age group, Roblox Help says it removes their email address and phone number, among other things. In general, Roblox says the only email address verified on an account should be your own or a parent's. If you put someone else's address there, that person receives the password reset emails and with them access to the account.

Does Roblox still have a parent PIN?+

No. Roblox Help says: "Roblox has replaced parent PIN with Roblox accounts with parent privileges". Parents need their own Roblox account for this, verify their age, according to Roblox for example with a government ID or a credit card, and link it to the child's account. After that they can view and change the parental controls from their own device. According to Roblox, anyone with access to the parent account can also make changes to the linked child accounts. So the password of the parent account does not belong in the child's hands.
