At the start of 2025 the USK raised Roblox from 12 to 16. Which reasons the USK gives, how Roblox handles chat and games today, and what actually helps families.

In Germany, Roblox has carried a USK rating of 16 since the start of 2025. Before that it said 12. The short answer to the question: as reasons for the 16, the USK lists violence, content for different age groups and increased incentives to buy. The increased incentives to buy are new compared with the old rating. In general, the USK explains its higher ratings with the content of the games that users build themselves, and with a lack of effective safeguards.

As of 25 September 2026. On this day we checked the USK announcement on the Roblox rating, today’s rating in the Google Play Store, the Roblox Help articles on maturity labels, age groups, age checks, parental controls and the chat filter, as well as the maturity label of Murder Mystery 2 on Roblox.

As someone who plays Roblox regularly, I can tell you this: purchases, content and chat are not a problem on paper. You really do run into them while playing. If you want to know what Roblox is in the first place, our page What is Roblox gives you a calm introduction.

What exactly the USK says about Roblox

In January 2025 the USK, the German age rating body, published the results of a fresh review of almost 20 game creator platforms, meaning platforms where users build games themselves. Half of them kept their rating, the others got a higher one. Roblox went from USK 12 to USK 16.

Next to the age rating, the USK lists reasons for the rating and notes about features the game has. For Roblox it looks like this:

  • Before, USK 12: reasons violence, content for different age groups and scary moments. Notes chats and in-game purchases with random items.
  • As of January 2025, USK 16: reasons violence, content for different age groups and increased incentives to buy. Notes chats and in-game purchases with random items.

The German Google Play Store still shows exactly this today.

In its announcement, the USK does not give a separate explanation for each platform. For the higher ratings in general, it names two reasons: the content of the games users build themselves weighs more heavily for youth protection. And effective safeguards are missing, for example age ratings based on German standards or well secured child accounts. The USK also counts settings that let parents guide their children’s play as safeguards.

Reason 1: Increased incentives to buy

Roblox runs on its own currency, Robux. Many games on the platform are free, but they offer outfits, items or in-game advantages for Robux. The social pressure while playing is real. “Everyone else already has this weapon” is a genuine argument that children hear inside the game world.

The increased incentives to buy are the reason that is new for Roblox. The USK means mechanisms that can build up pressure to buy, for example confusing shops with several currencies, advantages you can buy, or notices that an offer is about to run out. The note about random items means: there are purchases where you do not know beforehand exactly what you will get.

In practice, a clear agreement up front helps: how much Robux per month is okay, and what may it be spent on? Prepaid cards from a shop are more transparent than payment details stored in the account. With a linked parent account you can also set a monthly spending limit in parental controls and get notified about spending. Roblox names two limits here: the spending limit does not apply to redeeming gift cards, and from age 13 spending limits no longer apply, only the notifications stay.

Reason 2: Violence and content for different age groups

Roblox is not an app with one game. It is a platform where users build and publish games themselves. According to the USK, such platforms now offer games across all genres and therefore for different age groups. That is what the reason “content for different age groups” describes: games for small children and games for adults sit on the same platform. By “violence”, the USK means forceful depictions of fighting or violence that can look realistic or are at the centre of the game. The USK also writes that a higher rating can follow if, for example, realistic shooters can be rebuilt for younger age groups without any limits.

Roblox has its own rating system for games, with the labels Minimal, Mild, Moderate and Restricted. According to Roblox, Restricted games are only open to age checked users aged 18 and over. The USK counts it as a plus if a platform shows ratings based on German age levels, and as a minus if it does not. Roblox shows its own labels, not USK levels.

What can help: take a short look yourself before a child starts a new game. The label on the game’s page gives you a rough idea. According to Roblox, though, the information about a game’s content comes from the people who make the game. What each label means and which games Roblox opens to children at which age is explained in our guide What age is Roblox for?

And the chat?

Among the reasons for the 16, Roblox has no increased communication risk. The USK did give that reason in the same review, but to another platform (Blockman Go), not to Roblox. For Roblox, chat only appears as a note: the feature exists. That said, the USK does list child accounts that are not secured well enough among the general reasons for its higher ratings.

This is how Roblox Help describes the way chat works today:

  • Roblox currently requires an age check for all chat, either by estimating the age from the face or, from age 13, with an ID. Anyone who has not done the check yet can, in most regions, only play games during a transition period.
  • After the check, children and teens chat with users in similar age groups or with trusted friends.
  • Children under 9 need their parents’ consent for game chat. Children under 13 need it for direct chat, and children aged 9 to 12 also for certain other communication features.
  • Roblox filters chat by default for all users. For children under 13, Roblox explicitly filters their posts as well. This is meant to remove inappropriate content and to prevent personal information from being shared.

And a wrong year of birth? If you enter an age that is too high when creating the account, it ends up in an age group with fewer limits. For chat, the age check kicks in: if an account says 13 or older and the estimate comes out under 13, Roblox moves it to the younger age group after a 48-hour grace period. For the other games, the date of birth on the account counts as long as there is no age check, which Roblox calls a transition period. After an age check, the age group from the check counts. So create the account together, with the real date of birth.

What parents can actually do: create a parent account of your own and link it to your child’s account. Only through that link can you set up parental controls. Under Communication you then decide whether and with whom your child may chat in game chat, in direct chat and with friends. How to link the accounts is in our guide Create a Roblox account.

What changes for families who already play Roblox

The new rating is an assessment from the point of view of youth protection. It is not a ban at home, but the USK does advise parents to allow only games with a suitable age rating. On Roblox itself, parents today set up parental controls through a linked parent account of their own. So for families who allow Roblox, the most important step is: link a parent account, set chat, games and spending in parental controls, know which games are being played, and look at the screen now and then.

Murder Mystery 2 has the maturity label Moderate on Roblox. Roblox names repeated moderate violence and light realistic blood as the reasons. In a Roblox Kids account for ages 5 to 8, MM2 can only be played if the parents allow it individually. From age 9, games rated Moderate are possible in a Roblox Select account. But Select only opens a selection of games. If a game is missing from it, parents can allow it individually. The idea of the game is clear, and the rounds are short. With MM2, parents should also keep an eye on the trading system running in the background. Children trade knives and items with each other, and that has its own rules and its own ideas about value. We explain how it works on our page about MM2 trading. If you want to check whether a trade was fair, our MM2 value list gives you something to go by.

The essentials in brief

For the 16, the USK lists three reasons for Roblox: violence, content for different age groups and increased incentives to buy. Chat is not a reason there but a note, and today Roblox requires an age check for all chat. The USK advises allowing only games with a suitable age rating. Families who allow Roblox anyway reduce the biggest risks if they link a parent account, set spending and chat in parental controls and take a quick look at new games first.

Where the information comes from

The old and the new Roblox rating with reasons and notes, that such platforms offer games for different age groups, the general reasons for the higher ratings and the advice to create the account together are in the USK announcement of 15 January 2025, Game Creator Plattformen auf dem Prüfstand (in German). What reasons and notes are, and what violence, increased incentives to buy and random items mean, is explained by the USK under Die USK-Alterskennzeichen (in German). That the state does not use the ratings to decide what parents allow at home is under Was bewirken die Kennzeichen? (in German). Today’s rating is shown on the Roblox listing in the German Google Play Store. The four labels, and that the people who make a game provide the information about its content, are in Roblox Help under Content Maturity Labels. Which games Roblox Kids and Roblox Select open, that children aged 9 to 12 need their parents’ consent for certain communication features, and that spending limits no longer apply from 13, is under What happens as my child or teen gets older on Roblox? That all chat requires an age check, who you can chat with afterwards and the 48-hour grace period are under Understanding Age Checks on Roblox. That parental controls need a linked parent account, that Kids and Select accounts only show a selection of games, the communication settings and the spending limit are described in the Parental Controls Overview, and the chat filter in Safety Features: Chat, Privacy & Filtering. Roblox shows the Moderate label and its reasons on the Murder Mystery 2 game page.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the USK raise Roblox to 16?+

The USK, the German age rating body, raised Roblox from 12 to 16 at the start of 2025. As reasons for the rating it lists violence, content for different age groups and increased incentives to buy. The increased incentives to buy are new compared with the old rating. The notes about chats and in-game purchases with random items were already part of the old rating. In general, the USK explains its higher ratings with the content of the games that users build themselves, and with a lack of effective safeguards, such as age ratings based on German standards or child accounts that are not secured well enough.

Are children under 16 not allowed to play Roblox now?+

The USK rating is not a ban at home. According to the USK, the state does not, in principle, use age ratings to decide which games parents allow their children at home. The USK does advise parents to allow only games with a suitable age rating. For platforms like Roblox it also advises creating the account together with the child, so that only age-appropriate games are shown and purchases and chat are limited or switched off. On Roblox this works through a parent account of your own that is linked to your child's account.

Does the new age rating apply to Murder Mystery 2 as well?+

The USK 16 rating applies to the Roblox platform as a whole. Murder Mystery 2 is a game inside it, and Roblox gives it its own maturity label, Moderate. Roblox names repeated moderate violence and light realistic blood as the reasons. In a Roblox Kids account for ages 5 to 8, Murder Mystery 2 can only be played if the parents allow it individually in parental controls. From age 9, games rated Moderate are possible in a Roblox Select account. But Select only opens a selection of games. If a game is missing from it, parents can allow it individually.
