Roblox age estimation: what happens to the photo and how to fix a wrong age
By Liska, has been playing Roblox and Murder Mystery 2 for almost three years
Roblox estimates your age with the camera. What happens to the picture, who processes it, and how parents can correct an age that was guessed wrongly.
Contents
Since the start of December 2025, Roblox has been checking age with the camera in a few countries, and worldwide since 7 January 2026. You hold your face in front of the phone camera or webcam for a moment, a program guesses how old you are, and after that it is settled which age group your account lands in. If that guess is wrong, there is one easy way back, and exactly one. A parent with a linked account may correct the age once after the first check, through the parental controls. Once that single correction is used up, it runs through an ID document from age 13, and only parents do that. For children under 13, the ID route does not exist at all. There, the only thing left is Roblox customer support.
Status: 10 September 2026. On that day we checked the Roblox help section, the announcements in the Roblox newsroom, and the Roblox section of klicksafe from 26 August 2026. Everything written here about how the pictures are handled comes from Roblox itself. We did not find an independent German body that has measured this, and we would rather say so than leave it out. This is not legal advice.
My first try went wrong. It was evening, I was sitting at the computer under the ceiling light, and half of my face was in shadow. The window simply started over from the beginning. The next day at a bright window it worked on the first go.
No child does this check alone
Before we get to the steps, one sentence stands above everything else: a child does not do the age check alone, a child does it together with a parent. That is not a polite phrase. The check deals with a biometric feature, so with data that is specially protected, and in Germany a child under 16 cannot give valid consent to that processing on their own. The parents are the ones who have to agree.
In practice that means: an adult sits next to the child, gives the camera permission, and decides whether this happens at all. And before anyone taps “Continue”, it is worth taking a break. The one easy correction afterwards only exists once.
What really happens during the age estimate
The check takes less than a minute and always runs the same way.
- The prompt appears on its own as soon as you want to use something that needs a checked age, the chat for example. Otherwise the way there is through the settings. For the correction by parents, Roblox describes the path word for word: sign in to the linked parent account, then Settings, then Parental Controls, then tap the pencil icon next to the child’s date of birth.
- Roblox asks for permission to use the camera. This permission comes from the parents. Without it, nothing goes further.
- Only now do you hold your face inside the frame on the screen. Bright, even light helps. A cap, a hood or sunglasses get in the way.
- The program estimates your age from the camera picture. That takes a few seconds.
- Your account then lands in an age group, and that decides who is allowed to message you and which games you see.
Two things get mixed up easily here. The first is the account types: Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and from 16 the normal account. The second is the age groups for chat: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, and 16 and over. Only for the chat groups does this rule apply: you write with your own group and with the one directly above and the one directly below. The line at 16 is a hard one. Roblox gives an example with an estimated age of 12: chat only with users up to 15, everyone from 16 is blocked. Roblox writes itself that the age groups and the default settings can differ by country and by product. What else these account types change is in our news item about the endless feeds being switched off in kids’ accounts.
What happens to the picture, and what I do not know
The most important part first, and it is in the Roblox documents: the picture does not stay with Roblox alone. For processing the pictures and videos in facial age estimation, Roblox names a service provider, the company Persona. Roblox writes that Persona follows the GDPR and works inside Europe. So the face picture goes to a third company, and parents should know that before they agree.
Roblox writes further that the picture is only used for the estimate and is deleted afterwards. Whether that really happens straight away, how long something is kept in the background, and what stays behind in logs, I do not know. I found no independent check on this, only what the companies say.
What I can say: the route through an ID document shows far more about a person than a camera picture does. An ID has a name, a date of birth and an ID number on it. That is why it is no small thing whether the first estimate sits right or not.
Why an age that is too high ends up in the profile, and what that costs
The way I see it, one point gets overlooked easily here. There can be different reasons why a child enters a wrong year of birth when signing up. One obvious reason is completely unspectacular: without a checked age the chat is almost off, and part of the catalogue is missing. This motive is not proven, it is my own explanation from everyday playing. In Murder Mystery 2 I notice it right away: deals while trading run through the chat, and whoever can only write in a limited way often just gets passed over.
The price for that comes later, and it has two parts. First, the camera estimates you the way you look, and a year of birth entered too high no longer matches that. The only way out of that situation is the one correction, and after that it is gone. Second, a wrong date of birth goes against the Roblox terms of use and, in the worst case, can cost the account. Tricks to fool the check are deliberately not a topic here: Roblox also looks at how an account behaves. The real date of birth from the start is the only way with no downside, and how that works when you set the account up is in our guide on creating a Roblox account.
When the estimated age is wrong
Wrong estimates do happen. The German site fettspielen.de was already collecting cases in December 2025 where adults were sorted in as teenagers and teenagers as adults. There is one figure on accuracy: the British Age Check Certification Scheme (ACCS) tested the models of the service provider Persona and, for users under 18, arrived at a mean absolute error of 1.4 years. What matters is what that means: a mean error is an average, not an upper limit. Single estimates can be a lot further off, and that shows up especially when someone sits right on the line between two age groups.
- First look at which date of birth is in the account at all. It is worth checking whether an old, wrong entry is still sitting there, because you need the correct date for the correction anyway.
- Do not repeat the check several times in a row hoping that a new picture will change something.
- If no parent account is linked yet, link it first. Without that connection, the correction cannot be started.
- Make the correction in one go, with the correct date of birth, in the parental controls.
- If the route is already used up, everything depends on the age of the child (see the next paragraph).
Between step 3 and step 4, another break is worth it. Talk it through at home before anyone taps, because this one click cannot be repeated.
Once the single correction is used up, there are two different situations. If the child is 13 or older, the route through an ID document is left. Only parents take this step: a child never photographs an ID alone, and certainly not a parent’s ID. For the German identity card there are separate rules (Paragraph 20 of the German Identity Card Act). Only the holder may allow a copy, the copy has to be recognisable as a copy, and details that are not needed for the purpose may be covered up. If the child is younger than 13, Roblox says this route is not open at all. Then customer support is what is left: Roblox names support and complaints routes that users can use to report a wrong estimate. As far as we know on 10 September 2026, that is the only remaining option for children under 13.
What parents should settle before the first check
You have three decisions here, and all three are easier if you make them beforehand instead of in the middle of an argument.
Link the parent account before your child goes to the check. If that connection is missing, you cannot use the one-time correction, and depending on the age of the child, only the ID or customer support is left afterwards.
Settle the real date of birth calmly. If your child admits to making themselves older, that is exactly the cheapest moment for it. After that it gets more work.
Decide on purpose whether you want the check at all. In Germany, the USK has rated Roblox 16 and over since the start of 2025. Whether your child plays at home is up to you. The reasons for that rating are in our guide on why Roblox is now rated 16 and over. Without an age check, the chat stays heavily restricted. That is inconvenient, but it is a valid decision. Which settings go with it is shown in our overview Is Roblox safe for kids?.
Where these details come from
The process, the one-time correction, the age limit of 13 for the ID document, the service provider Persona and the figure from the Age Check Certification Scheme are in the Roblox help section under Understanding Age Checks and on the page Age Estimation. Roblox announced the worldwide requirement for chat on 7 January 2026. Before that it had been running since the start of December 2025 in a few countries, among them Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands. Roblox reported the worldwide availability of the Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts on 16 June 2026. A German view for families has been available from klicksafe since 26 August 2026, and fettspielen.de collected wrong cases on 5 December 2025.
The bottom line: the age estimate is not a formality you click away on the side. It decides who a child may write with and what a child gets to see, it passes through the hands of another company, and it can only be turned back the easy way once. How many children and adults are on the platform at all is in our Roblox statistics 2026, with sources.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to the photo from the Roblox age check?+
Roblox writes in its own help section that the picture is only used for the estimate and is deleted afterwards. Roblox does not process it alone: for facial age estimation, Roblox names a service provider, the company Persona, and writes that Persona works in line with the GDPR and inside Europe. That is what the company says about itself, not an independent measurement, and on 10 September 2026 we did not find more than that. You can read up on the process at Roblox under “Understanding Age Checks” and in the Roblox section of klicksafe from 26 August 2026. If you do not trust the camera picture, there are two other routes: confirmation through the linked parent account and, from age 13, an ID document. An ID shows a lot more about a person than a selfie does: name, date of birth and an ID number. That is why only parents take this step.
How often can I correct my child's estimated age?+
Once. After the first check, a parent with a linked account may change the age in the parental controls. After that, this easy route is used up. From age 13 it then runs through an ID document, and only parents handle that. For children under 13, Roblox says the ID route is not open at all. There, the only thing left is Roblox customer support with its complaints route. Status: 10 September 2026, source is the Roblox help section.
Roblox guessed my child too young. What do I do first?+
First look at which date of birth is in the account. It is worth checking whether an old, wrong entry is still sitting there, because you need the correct date for the correction anyway. How often that is the real cause, we do not know, we found no figure on it. Then check whether the parent account is linked, because without that connection the correction cannot be started at all. Only then make the correction in the parental controls, in one go and with the correct date of birth. Repeating the check several times in a row does not help and can make the whole thing confusing.
Does my child have to take part in the age check?+
As of 10 September 2026, there is no obligation to have an account checked. Without a checked age, the chat functions stay heavily restricted and part of the game catalogue stays invisible. But Roblox is widening the requirement step by step: for chat, Roblox has required the check worldwide since January 2026. That is inconvenient, but staying without a check is a valid decision, and some families make it on purpose. For context: in Germany, the USK has rated Roblox 16 and over since the start of 2025. Whether a child plays at home is for the parents to decide.
