Roblox Studio for beginners: build your first own game

By Liska, has been playing Roblox and Murder Mystery 2 for almost three years

Roblox Studio is free and runs on Windows and Mac. How to set up a first project, place building blocks, write a small script and test it.

Contents

Roblox Studio is the free program you use to build your own Roblox games, and it runs on Windows and Mac. All you need is a Roblox account, the download from the Roblox website and a bit of patience the first time you try it. In this guide you build a first, simple game step by step: an empty area, a few building blocks, a small script and a test run.

As of 25 September 2026. On that day we checked the Roblox documentation on Studio, templates, parts, testing modes, scripts, publishing and content maturity, plus the Roblox article by klicksafe from 26 August 2026. Where a detail was missing there, we left it out rather than guess.

What Roblox Studio is and what it runs on

Roblox Studio is a separate program, apart from the Roblox app you play with. You build in Studio and you play in the app (your own game too). According to the Roblox documentation, Studio is “a free application available on Windows and Mac”. On Windows you need at least Windows 10 (Windows 11 recommended), on a Mac at least macOS 10.14 (macOS 14 or newer recommended). On top of that, at least 3 GB of memory (8 GB recommended). For the screen, Roblox recommends 1600×900 pixels or higher; the documentation does not name a minimum resolution. What Roblox is as a platform in the first place is covered in our basics article What is Roblox?.

Installing and creating the first project

It does not work without a Roblox account, so you create that first. How to do it is in our guide Creating a Roblox account. Studio has its own installer, separate from the game app in our guide Downloading and installing Roblox. You download it, open the file (RobloxStudio.exe on Windows, RobloxStudio.dmg on a Mac), start Studio and sign in with your Roblox account. In its documentation, Roblox explicitly advises keeping Studio up to date so you can use the latest features.

  1. Open Studio and sign in.
  2. Pick a template on the start screen. For getting started, “Baseplate” is a good fit. According to the Roblox documentation, this template contains only two objects: a SpawnLocation, which Roblox describes as the place “where player characters appear in the 3D space when they join a game”, and the baseplate itself, a floor with “a 4x4 grid texture that aligns with stud measurements”.
  3. The new project appears as an empty area with a grid floor. That is your building site.

Placing, anchoring and testing blocks

Now the first building block comes in. According to the Roblox documentation, there are five basic shapes: Block, Sphere, Cylinder, Wedge and Corner Wedge. A single block is enough to start with.

  1. Place a block on the baseplate.
  2. Use the Move tool to drag it where you want it. It shows handles in 3D space that you pull on.
  3. Use the Scale tool to change the size, also with drag handles.
  4. Use the Rotate tool to turn it.
  5. Anchor the block. The documentation says platforms have to be anchored with the Anchor tool so they keep their position. Without anchoring, a floating part falls down with gravity when you test.

For testing, the Roblox documentation names several modes. “Test” (F5) starts the simulation and puts your avatar at a SpawnLocation or roughly at the coordinate (0, 100, 0). “Run” (F8) starts without an avatar, you only control the Studio camera. “Stop” (Shift+F5) ends the test run and, according to the documentation, resets all objects to how they were before the test. Test and Stop are enough to begin with: build, test, build again.

The first script

A script turns building blocks into a game that reacts. According to the Roblox documentation, you create a script like this:

  1. In the Explorer window, hover over ServerScriptService.
  2. Click the plus symbol and choose “Script”.
  3. Rename the script, for example to “PracticeScript”.

A new script contains the line print("Hello world!") by default. The documentation explains: “Print functions display text on the screen.” You open the output window for it from the “Window” menu in Studio. If you now start a test run, “Hello world!” appears in the Output window.

A second small example shows how a script changes a building block. First rename your block to “PracticePart” in the Explorer, otherwise the script will not find it. According to the Roblox documentation, you reach this part in the workspace with workspace.PracticePart and change its colour through the .Color property, for example with workspace.PracticePart.Color = Color3.fromRGB(255, 230, 50). RGB values each go from 0 to 255. Studio also offers a colour picker if typing in the numbers is too fiddly.

Saving and who is allowed to see the game

Through the “File” menu and then “Publish to Roblox”, you save your project to the cloud. According to the Roblox documentation, you enter the game’s name and description, choose whether it belongs to your account or a group, and pick the supported devices. Roblox stores the data model of your start place as an .rblx file in the cloud.

Important for the start: according to the same documentation, new games are private by default. A private game is described there as “only available to the owner or users with Edit permissions”. So your first project stays private for now.

According to the same page, it can only be made public once the account is at least 2 days old, an age check has been done through facial age estimation or an ID document, and the content maturity questionnaire has been filled in. Whether and when a child makes a game public is therefore best decided together as a family.

Every game also has the content maturity questionnaire. According to the Roblox documentation, creators give details about their own content in it, and Roblox then decides which age group the game is shown to. If this information is missing, the documentation says Roblox restricts the game’s playability for all players. For public games, the questionnaire is mandatory.

What parents should know

Roblox Studio itself costs nothing, an account and the installation are enough. If you build the first project together with a child, the tutorials in the Roblox Creator Hub are a good next step. They are in English and include both short and longer guides.

A separate question from using Studio is how a child uses Roblox overall. The German online safety initiative klicksafe writes that Roblox is rated 16 and over in Germany, and names as risks inappropriate content, contact with other players, incentives to buy and long usage times. As topics for parents, klicksafe names parental supervision, safety settings, contacts, gifts and how to handle Robux. Which settings are worth looking at is in our overview Keeping Roblox safe for kids.

Where the information comes from

Everything about Studio comes from the Roblox documentation in the Creator Hub linked above. The context for parents in Germany comes from the klicksafe article from 26 August 2026 (in German).

Summary

A first Roblox game comes together in small steps: install Studio, open an empty baseplate, place and anchor a block, test it, try a script with a single line and finally click “Publish to Roblox” once. As long as it is private, only you and people you give access to can see the result. If you do this together with a child, you can continue with the tutorials in the Creator Hub and at the same time keep an eye on how the child uses Roblox overall.

Frequently asked questions

Is Roblox Studio free?+

Yes. In its own documentation, Roblox describes Studio as “a free application available on Windows and Mac”. All you need is a Roblox account and the download, the program itself costs nothing.

What computer does Roblox Studio run on?+

According to the Roblox documentation, on Windows you need at least Windows 10 (Windows 11 recommended), and on a Mac at least macOS 10.14 (macOS 14 or newer recommended). On top of that, at least 3 GB of memory (8 GB recommended). For the screen, Roblox recommends a resolution of 1600×900 pixels or higher; the documentation does not name a minimum resolution.

Can everyone see my first game as soon as I save it?+

No. New games on Roblox are private by default. According to the documentation, a private game is “only available to the owner or users with Edit permissions”. A game only becomes public once you change that. For this, Roblox requires, among other things, an account that is at least 2 days old, an age check through facial age estimation or an ID document, and a completed content maturity questionnaire. Children are best off making this decision together with their parents.

What is the content maturity questionnaire?+

Roblox calls it the Maturity & Compliance Questionnaire. In it, creators give information about their own content, and Roblox uses it to decide which age group gets to see the game. If the information is missing, the documentation says Roblox restricts the game's playability for all players. For public games, the questionnaire is mandatory.
